There was a time back in the mid-90s when the Subaru Outback was just a trim option for the Legacy wagon. However, its added protective cladding and slightly raised suspension enhanced the Legacy Outback's off-road aspirations, which proved quite popular, especially among more outdoorsy types. Spurred on by the response, Subaru eventually spun off the Outback into its own nameplate, emphasizing its rugged character and giving birth to the World's First Sport Utility Wagon. And a few years later, the Outback was an instrumental part of Subaru's transition into the adventurous brand we know today.
This summer, Subaru is once again taking the Outback to new heights of from-the-factory capability with all-new 2022 Outback Wilderness™. Here's a quick look at what makes this new arrival the most capable and adventure-ready Outback ever.
2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness™ Performance
With standard features and attributes like Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive, X-MODE advanced traction management, and 8.7 inches of ground clearance, the Outback is already one of the segment's most capable nameplates. The Outback Wilderness™ takes things a step further, boasting a class-leading 9.5 inches of ground clearance and increased approach, departure, and breakover angles. Additionally, the suspension system has been specially tuned to deliver enhanced off-road stability while retaining the SUV's signature on-road manners and comfort. The Outback Wilderness™ also comes standard with dual-function X-MODE and extra settings for Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud.
Under the hood, it's is powered by a robust and responsive 2.4L turbocharged BOXER engine that makes 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. Finally, the Outback Wilderness™ rolls on exclusive matte-black 17-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Yokohama GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires, with a standard full-size spare stored under the cargo area.
