It's been quite the summer so far - hot, humid, wet and then hot again.  And even though it's been beautiful, it's also been a little tough to take.  Of course, this weather isn't just tough on people -  our dogs have also had a hard time handling the heat.  Here are some tips on how you can help your pups keep their cool in the dog days of summer...

1)  Always have fresh, cool water available for your dog

Dogs don't perspire like humans do.  Temperatures that you can handle can cause heatstroke in your pet.  Keep the water bowl filled so that your dog can cool off with fresh water as needed.

2)  Never leave your dog in the car in the summer - even with the windows cracked

In summer weather, a car's temperature can increase by as much as 30 degrees in 30 minutes.  On an 85-degree day (and we've been well past that this week!), the temperature inside a car with the windows cracked slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes!

3)  Walk your dog in the early morning or later in the evening, when the temperature is cooler

If your dog walks are on asphalt or sidewalks, keep them shorter.  Dogs are closer to the street so their bodies heat up quicker and the hot pavement can burn their paws.

Keep the above tips in mind and you and your dog will both keep your cool this beautiful Berkshire summer!
